Zaisen was a painter who also authored a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Zaisen Shugachō (i.e., Picture Lessons by Zaisen). Published in 1889, this book provided new artists with pictures to trace or copy. The book’s twenty-four pictures of flowers and fruits are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Zaisen drew the shapes of his picture subjects accurately but he colored them only in shades of gray.
